New Jersey is launching an emergency program to help residents obtain a REAL ID ahead of the upcoming May 7 deadline. Starting Thursday (April 24), residents with urgent travel needs can schedule appointments for expedited REAL ID processing. The program is specifically for those who need to board a domestic flight within 14 days due to life-or-death situations or urgent travel needs and lack an alternative form of identification, such as a valid passport.
The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) announced that appointments will be available at the MVC Regional Center in Trenton. Eligible residents must complete a screening process and pay an $80 expedited shipping fee. The REAL ID emergency issuance request portal will be active starting Thursday, and appointments cannot be made through the regular MVC scheduling system.
To qualify, residents must provide documentation of their emergency, such as a death certificate or a letter from a hospital, and proof of travel within 14 days. According to the New Jersey MVC, immediate family members include parents, legal guardians, children, spouses, siblings, and grandparents.
The REAL ID program has faced multiple delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the deadline is now firm. The MVC releases thousands of new appointments each morning, and residents are advised to log on early to secure a spot. NorthJersey.com reports that the MVC has been increasing appointment availability to meet demand.
While obtaining a REAL ID is not mandatory, it will be required for domestic air travel and access to certain federal facilities. Residents can still use a standard driver's license for driving in New Jersey. The emergency program is designed to ensure that those with critical travel needs can obtain a REAL ID in time.
