Route 611, a crucial transportation link between the Lehigh Valley and the Poconos, has reopened after a nearly two-year closure. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) removed the "road closed" signs on Tuesday, marking a significant milestone for local transportation in the Delaware Water Gap area.
The three-mile stretch of Route 611 from Portland to Delaware Water Gap had been closed in both directions since a rockslide occurred during heavy rain on December 6, 2022. The closure had significantly impacted daily commutes and travel plans for residents and visitors in the region, affecting local businesses and tourism.
A deal between state and federal officials led to the reopening of the road. Crews installed a temporary, free-standing rockfall barrier at the site of the rockslide, allowing two-way traffic to flow while a more permanent solution is sought.
The reopening of Route 611 is expected to alleviate traffic congestion, improve accessibility, and provide a much-needed boost to local businesses and tourism. Janet Futchko, who operates Janet’s Jems thrift shop in Portland, expressed her excitement about the reopening to Lehigh Valley News, stating, "I will be ecstatic. At least I have a glimmer of hope that my business is going to be here.”
