Thousands of residents in New Jersey are still without power following severe storms that swept across the state. The storms, which occurred on Wednesday (July 17), resulted in downed trees and power lines, causing widespread power outages.

According to the Jersey Central Power and Light’s (JCP&L) outage map, over 6,000 people in Hunterdon County were left without power. The company has since restored power to about 50,000 customers affected by the storms.

Morris County was hit the hardest, with over 14,000 people experiencing power outages. Sussex County also reported over 4,700 people without power.

JCP&L has prioritized clearing hazards like downed power lines and blocked roads to ensure public safety. The company has also begun assessing the damage to initiate safe repairs, a process that can be time-consuming.

Residents are advised to report power outages to JCP&L by calling 1-888-LIGHTSS (1-888-544-4877). As the state recovers from the storm, cooler temperatures in the 80s are expected to return today and last well into next week.
