Over Half of PATH Riders Adopt Tap-and-Go Payment System

NYC Commuters Begin "Summer Of Hell" As Penn Station Begins Major Track Repairs

More than half of PATH riders are now using the new TAPP (Total Access PATH Payment) system. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey reports that since its introduction seven months ago, the TAPP system has seen over 7.6 million entries, highlighting its rapid adoption among commuters.

TAPP allows passengers to pay their fare at select turnstiles using contactless debit or credit cards, smartphones, or wearable devices. This innovation replaces the traditional PATH-issued SmartLink cards and pay-per-ride MetroCards, offering a more convenient and efficient way to access the PATH trains. The tap-and-go system significantly reduces wait times at ticket machines and speeds up the boarding process, enhancing the overall commuter experience.

The success of TAPP hasn't gone unnoticed. The Intelligent Transportation Society-New York recently awarded the system its 2024 "Project of the Year Award" for outstanding transportation initiatives, recognizing TAPP's innovative approach and impact on improving public transit operations.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey notes that the adoption of TAPP demonstrates the growing demand for modern, contactless payment options in public transportation. They believe this system not only offers greater convenience but also enhances security with its encrypted transactions.
