As reported by The Sparta Independent, Sparta Middle School's 6th-8th grade students competed in a preliminary geography bee, where the top 10 students were qualifiers and competed in the school-level competition for the National Geographic GeoBee, on Jan. 25.
In first place was Vaiden Pollard, second place went to Ian Bellush and Matthew Vassalo in third place. All top three winners are in seventh grade.
This school-level competition is only the first round of the annual National Geographic GeoBee, which is a competition based on geography that is meant to inspire students' curiosity about the world, while rewarding them in the end.
Any question asked within the bee can revolve around cultures, earth science, physical features, history and of course geography.
After the school champions take a qualifying test as their next step, 100 of the top test scorers will be eligible to compete in the State GeoBee. Winners of State GeoBees win an all-expenses paid trip to National Geographic Society in Washington D.C.

A GeoBee was developed in 1989 by the National Geographic Society with concern about the lack of geographic knowledge within young people of the United States.
