According to NJ.com, a Highland Park councilwoman has been accused of beating her husband over the head with a broomstick and cookbook.
57-year-old Susan Welkovits was charged on Jan. 11 with possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes. In addition, she was charged with simple assault after she bit her husband on his forearm, leaving "visible signs of abuse," according to police. Back in January of 2012, Welkovits was appointed to the borough council.
Her husband refused treatment for his injuries, upon police arrival.
While investigating, police found text messages that the husband sent to co-workers, telling them he had been abused by his wife.
A police report noted that there were children present at the time of the incident.
Welkovits already appeared in court and was released, but it is unclear when she will return to the courtroom.
The NJ.com article mentions that Welkovits' bio says her and her husband are Highland Park High School graduates. It also states that she returned to Highland Park about 10 years ago, from New York City, to raise a family.
Welkovits declined to comment on a phone call Monday afternoon, while Highland Park Mayor Gayle Brill Mittler declined to comment as well.
