According to the NJ Herald, a Franklin man was arrested after he is alleged to have successfully used counterfeit money at a Taco Bell back in December. Police say he returned three days after the original attempt to try using more.
24-year-old Christopher Pennella was arrested on Jan. 7, being charged with two counts of forgery and two counts of theft by deception.
According to police, around 10 p.m. on Dec. 5, Pennella purchased food and a beverage using counterfeit money, which the employees were unaware of at the time.
Just a few days later, as stated above, an employee contacted Franklin police around 8 p.m. on Dec. 8 in report of a customer "attempting to use counterfeit currency."
Lt. Nevin Mattessich said Pennella was arrested after an investigation occurred.
Pennella reportedly obtained the counterfeit money from an unknown person and therefore the investigation is ongoing.
Any local businesses that come across any fraudulent transactions of counterfeit currency are asked to report to Franklin Detective Daniel Flora.
Detective Flora can be reached at dflora@franklinpd.org or (973)-827-7700, ext. 237.
