At the end of September, a deadly virus swept through the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, killing 10 children and infecting 19 others, so far. Health care workers were asking why these children were not being transferred to hospitals when they became very ill.
According to NJ.com, two employees of the center, who remain anonymous, stated that the senior administrators chose to delay sending kids to hospitals, even after some started to die. They claimed that the senior staff needed to keep all 92 beds in their pediatric unit full, in order for the Medicaid funds to continue.
The children were developing a "stubborn respiratory infection" and were getting fevers that accumulated up to 104 degrees, where staff turned up the air conditioners to alleviate their fevers.
